Accept as many payment options as possible

Recently we went to a pair of concerts and wanted to get some merch.

In the first one, they used Venmo only. In the second, they used Venmo, Paypal, cash, and regular ol' plastic credit cards.

Since we didn't have Venmo, we almost skipped over getting a t-shirt in the first concert. It ended up the friend of the band had Paypal so they ran the payment that way.

At the second concert we were able to use Paypal directly (though Paypal's app kept crashing due to typical Paypal shittyness).

Accepting as many payment methods as you can gives your customers more options when they want to buy. This also includes merchant accounts that limit some credit card types (e.g. Discover, American Express), pay-over-time, and express pay (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay).

Setting up the different payment methods in Shopify can be tricky but once setup, they usually just keep working. Shopify does a good job of integrating them into their standardized checkout.

The costs between the different options will vary and it might seem be more profitable to limit the options to those. The problem is that you might lose out on a sale entirely. Trying to avoid a 5% fee might mean you lose 100% of that order. If after several months no one uses a payment method, then consider removing it to reduce fees.
