Why your new Shopify theme is causing crawl errors in Google Search Console

By Ilana Davis

Recently a JSON-LD for SEO customer emailed me about some issues they were having with a new Shopify theme:

We recently went through a site upgrade and when looking at google search console, I feel like I’m seeing far more crawl warnings than I used to.

If you’ve just updated your theme, it could have changed both the code and URLs enough to cause problems with Search Console and Google Search’s crawler, and even your SEO. Url changes are a very common problem that catches stores by surprise.

Unfortunately, most stores don’t know it’s a problem until after they’ve made the theme change and the damage has started. That’s why I recommend testing every new theme before upgrading.

I also recommend running a website crawler on your store and seeing if it finds any missing pages, broken links, or excessive redirects. All of those could mess with Google’s crawler and cause it to run inefficiently and chip away at your SEO.

Even many of the newest and just upgraded Shopify themes don’t qualify for Google’s Rich Results so you lose out on highly visible SEO enhancements.

JSON-LD for SEO provides high-quality data that will let your store qualify for Rich Results. Often times faster than the industry averages.
