Why is internal linking important

By Ilana Davis

After launching Linking Llama I received a lot of great questions related to the benefits of the app. That's when I realized that many folks may not know what internal linking is and why you should care.

When we say "internal linking" we mean creating a link or connection from one page on your website to another.

A simple way to think of this is with your main navigation menu which has links to other pages across your website. Each of those are internal links. But we should be looking at internal link strategies beyond your navigation menu.

Using internal links that are deeper into your website can add a lot of benefits to your Shopify site. An example of a deeper internal link could be a product page linking to another product page.

Internal linking is a positive signal to search engines like Google in a few ways:

  1. Tells search engines both pages are important and may influence page ranking.
  2. Indicates that these two pages are connected based on the topic or content.
  3. Hints to Google that a query matching one page may also be relevant to the linked page.
  4. Helps search engines to discover more content.

They are also helpful to your customers as they progress through the site to find what they are looking for.

Linking to related pages, where appropriate, allows customers to discover similar content.

Improving your customers experience is the heart of what Google really cares about. They want it to be easy for customers to go from one page to another without having to use the search function or landing on a dead-end page.

Though Linking Llama can help to create internal links that look good, you can also just add a hyperlink to the page. Just make sure that the anchor text is relevant as well.
