Stop Stressing About Title Length — Google Doesn’t Care

Making sure your search results are looking their best is important to get clicks, but all too often, tools can miss the mark.

Like one store I ran into who used a tool that complained their titles and URLs were too long. The tool said it should fit within 600px. 😒

Forget the fact that pixels are not comparable between devices or from browser to browser. This just seems like a recommendation to force conformity to a standard that doesn't exist.

Google doesn't care how long your title is, as long as you account for your text getting cut off:

Also avoid unnecessarily long or verbose text in your title elements. While there's no limit on how long a title element can be, the title link is truncated in Google Search results as needed, typically to fit the device width.

Does your title accurately describe the page?

Does it avoid stuffing in unnecessary elements?

Then you're probably fine.

A great title will go a bit further though.

It'll add some sales copy to spark an interest in a searcher to click through to the page and start reading what's on a page. That sales copy might need a bit more than just a word or two.

An easy way to do this is to add an adjective and maybe a claim.

  • "The fast way to clean dog hair"
  • "Made with the hottest peppers this side of the Mississippi River"
  • "Ethically and sustainability produced"

With this route you can then continue the sales copy into the page description which is great for linking the two. (This is how the best Google Ads are developed, using copy to lead a searcher along the buying funnel).

Stop worrying about how long your titles and descriptions are.

Google doesn't care and the more content you give them, the more likely they are to use parts of it in search results.
