Get on the accessibility train

By Ilana Davis

Nothing makes me happier than to see folks seeing the value of web accessibility!

None other than the Unofficial Shopify Podcast guy himself, Kurt Elster, has seen the importance of creating accessible websites. Kurt now takes the extra step to include closed captioning and works with Rev to ensure the words on the screen match what’s actually being said.

Guess what though, closed-caption isn’t just for those who are hearing impaired. I also depend on closed captioning when I’m on the bus without my headset or I don’t want my daughter to hear what I’m watching for examples.

I can’t tell you how frustrating it is when the audio doesn’t match the closed caption.

Two men appearing to sing "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" with closed-caption words "read off the rent those reindeer."

Next time you watch a video on Vimeo or YouTube, I challenge you to turn on closed captioning.

Then I challenge you to update your videos with closed captioning.

As of now, my most recent podcast and YouTube video have transcripts, and all future publications will include transcripts as well.

Adding closed caption can be a bit time consuming yet essential. You can have YouTube start it for you, review, and then make any changes you see fit or work with Rev as Kurt does. This is a low-cost investment that makes a big impact on your customers’ experience.

If you haven’t checked out Kurt’s podcast, do it! He creates amazing content and answers a lot of the questions that Shopify Plus stores are asking.
