Does Shopify backup store data?

By Ilana Davis

Have you ever downloaded an app to your phone or website, only to find out everything crashed?

Oh and by the way, when everything crashed, it also deleted all your data? (I will never get back my photos from 2015. Stupid iPhone)

I’ve been there.

So now I back everything up. Often.

But how do you back up your Shopify store?

Backup your Shopify store

Guess what – there are no native backups in Shopify. Yes, Shopify backs up all the data for their own records, but you don’t have access to those files. In the event something is inadvertently deleted in your Shopify store, they are gone forever. So yes, you should be aware of this and yes you should take steps to protect your store.

Backup Your Theme

Start by going to your Sales Channel in the admin panel. Select Online Store and then Themes.

You should now see your current theme with an Actions dropdown. Select Download theme file which will send you an email.

Backing Up products

I’d also recommend manually backing up your store data by exporting a CSV of your Product Details.

This can be done by selecting Products -> Export.

To be clear though, there’s so much more than needs a backup. Collections, product images, blogs, pages and more.

Backup Everything else

Sadly, Shopify doesn’t have a simple way to backup products, blogs, pages, collections, images, and more.

In this case, I’d recommend installing an app. Ugh! I know. Who wants to spend more money? This however I believe is money well spent!

Nobody wants to start from scratch. So invest in a backup!

How often should I backup?

Anytime you touch your store I’d recommend creating a backup before you touch it. When manually backing up your store, save the backup to your computer or a cloud-based system like Google Drive. Notice I said before you touch your store – this way if there is an issue with any changes you make, you can easily revert back to how it was before you made changes.

I usually do this at least once a month depending on how many updates I’ve got going on.

Go right now and back up everything! Or at least invest in an app to make sure you don’t lose your data. Nothing is worse than starting from scratch when you don’t have to.

Have you put a lot of hard work into your Shopify theme to get it just right. If you didn’t back it up there’s a chance you could lose it.

If you haven’t put a lot of work into your Shopify theme, why the hell not? Your theme is the biggest influence on your conversion rate and sales.
